Our Mission
Heart and Hand Yoga aims to create meaningful trips that combine yoga and mindfulness practice with travel, adventure, and volunteer work. We believe that an essential aspect of yoga practice is strengthening our ability to feel compassion for ourselves and others, and to connect with people of all walks of life, locations, and languages. We also believe in empowering individuals to act from this place of compassion. This combination of compassion and action forms the defining mission of Heart and Hand Yoga.
On our trips, participants experience more than just a vacation. We take people on meaningful and exciting international journeys in which we learn about the rich culture and land of our destination, make lasting connections with local people and one another, and give back to the communities that make our retreats possible.

Who We Are
Karen Macklin (ERYT-500) has been studying yoga and meditation since 2000, and has been most influenced by the teachings of Shadow Yoga, Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, Therapeutics, and Theravada Buddhist meditation. Karen teaches with an emphasis on developing internal awareness, deepening concentration, and creating ease in the body. Her classes are rhythmic flows that both challenge students and offer them an opportunity to enter a space of meditation and inquiry. Karen also writes about yoga and has contributed to Yoga Journal, Yoga International, FitYoga, Yogagenda, and Tricycle magazines. www.karenmacklin.com
Laurie Sleep (ERYT-500) began regularly practicing yoga to help manage a chronic injury and got hooked on both the physical and mental benefits. She earned her initial 500-hour certification through YogaWorks in New York. She currently studies with Annie Carpenter and has completed over 350 hours of SmartFLOW training. Laurie teaches alignment-based flow classes that focus on cultivating mindfulness through movement. With her clear instruction and down-to-earth style, she creates a warm and encouraging, but challenging, environment for students of all levels. An avid hiker, backpacker, and nature lover, Laurie also enjoys practicing and teaching outside and on the trail. www.laurieyoga.com
